Details of the submissions and review process

1. Preparing and submitting your outline

Please prepare an outline of 500 words or less. Our editorial staff will review the outline. Outlines will either be accepted without revisions or feedback for revisions will be given. We do not prescribe a specific format; however, we recommend you include:

  • A brief description of your topic or your idea
  • The reasons you think this topic matters
  • Proposed structure (mention the major points you want to hit)
  • Name and contact information of your proposed faculty reviewer (will not count towards 500-word limit). May be faculty at the University of Manitoba or elsewhere.

You are welcome to begin work on the manuscript as early as you like, but beware UMJM may wish to make changes to the piece as proposed in your outline. Therefore, you may wish to wait for your outline to be approved before beginning the bulk of the work.

 2.  Creating your manuscript

Once UMJM has approved your outline, the next step is to prepare the actual manuscript and submit to UMJM. Deadline to submit is December 15. Your piece will be reviewed by a UMJM editor and then passed on for Faculty Review. Faculty review will occur independently of UMJM editorial review.

 3.  Preparing the final draft of your manuscript

Following Peer Review and Faculty Review, your piece will be returned to you so that you may observe the recommendations made by your reviewers. You will then submit the final draft of your manuscript to UMJM. Congratulations! At this point your work is done. Your piece will be looked over by the same UMJM editor as before and then it will be published. The name of the Faculty Reviewer and of the UMJM editorial reviewer will appear in the journal under acknowledgements for their contributions to your piece.
